Applicable Large Employers (those with 50 or more full-time and full-time equivalent employees) are required to provide health insurance coverage to their full-time employees as designated under The Affordable Care Act (ACA).
Small businesses that do not qualify as Applicable Large Employers are not legally required by the ACA to offer health insurance to their employees.
The Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA), is a federal law that allows eligible employees and their dependents to continue their health insurance coverage after leaving a job or experiencing certain life events, such as a reduction in work hours or a divorce.
This applies to employers who maintain group health plans with at least 20 employees working on more than 50 percent of their typical business days in the previous calendar year.
